CINDER CITY : Release Date, Gameplay, and Everything We Know (2026)

If you searched for the Cinder City game, you probably saw a trailer of a ruined Seoul, a soldier in powered armor, and a system requirements list that made your PC nervous. You want to know three things: when it launches, how it actually plays, and whether your rig can run it.

This guide answers all three. Cinder City is the open-world MMO tactical shooter from BigFire Games, published by NC (formerly NCSOFT), and it began life as the long-rumored Project LLL. It’s targeting a second-half 2026 launch on PC and consoles which means it’s close enough that the details finally matter.

Below: confirmed release info, gameplay systems, the Cinderknight hero structure, PC specs, and how the playtests work.

What Is the Cinder City Game?

Cinder City is a cinematic third-person MMO tactical shooter built on Unreal Engine 5. Think cover-based gunplay in the vein of Tom Clancy’s The Division, wrapped around a persistent open world and large-scale cooperative PvE.

The setting is its hook. Cinder City takes place in a fallen near-future Seoul, with level design drawn from real districts like Samseong-dong and Nonhyeon-dong. But the fiction is stranger than straight post-apocalypse: the game folds a 10th-century Byzantine Empire and a 23rd-century future into a single collapsed timeline.

The world itself is large. BigFire has described more than 30km of seamlessly connected land, with procedurally driven content that reacts to your situation rather than looping fixed encounters.

Key facts at a glance:

  • Developer: BigFire Games
  • Publisher: NC (formerly NCSOFT)
  • Genre: Open-world MMO tactical shooter, third-person, co-op PvE
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5, with ray tracing and DLSS 4 support
  • Platforms: PC (Steam) and current-generation consoles
  • Former name: Project LLL

Announced under its new title at Gamescom 2025, the game was formally introduced in NC’s official reveal.

Cinder City Release Date: What’s Actually Confirmed

The Cinder City release date is a window, not a day: second half of 2026. NC has repeatedly reaffirmed that target, most recently alongside the Steam page launch, while other titles in its pipeline slipped to 2027.

The official Steam listing still reads Coming soon with no month attached. Treat any specific date circulating on aggregator sites as an estimate.

Two things would signal a real date: an open beta announcement, or a dated trailer at a major showcase. Neither has landed yet. Wishlisting on Steam remains the fastest way to get notified.

Cinder City Gameplay: How It Actually Plays

Cinderknights and Character Roles

You play as a Cinderknight a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier. Rather than building a blank-slate avatar, you pick from pre-built hero archetypes, each with a hand-crafted campaign and a distinct battlefield role.

BigFire Games CEO Bae Jaehyun has indicated roughly seven to nine playable heroes at launch, expanded from an original scope of five or six because each hero’s campaign grew larger than planned.

Notably, Cinder City skips the tank-healer-DPS trinity. Roles come from the tactical weapons and skills you equip through a gear-based progression system. Some gear is shared across all heroes; some is exclusive to specific Cinderknights. The result is build flexibility without rigid class locks.

Co-Op PvE, Bosses, and Raids

Story missions can be played solo, but cooperative PvE is the design center. The endgame structure includes field bosses, instanced dungeons, and large-scale world raids that expect squads to divide roles and coordinate rather than brute-force.

Steam’s tags also list PvP, though NC’s messaging so far has been overwhelmingly PvE-focused. Expect co-op to be the main event at launch.

Tactical Gear and Vehicles

Combat isn’t just gunplay. Confirmed tools include drones, invisibility tech, motorcycles, flying vehicles, and mechanical loaders the kind of kit that supports stealth approaches, vertical repositioning, and mech-scale fights against the game’s larger threats.

The Story: Seven, Joi, and the Hyde Group

The campaign follows Seven, a Cinderknight searching for his missing daughter, Joi, through a Seoul overrun by mutated creatures and criminal organizations.

The primary antagonist is the Hyde group, alongside twisted Creatures and hostile factions that ambush without warning. As you push deeper, the personal rescue mission widens into a conflict over the fate of the city and the timeline itself.

It’s a deliberately cinematic structure: character-driven, narrative-heavy, and unusual for a genre that often treats story as scaffolding for loot.

Cinder City System Requirements

This is where Cinder City briefly went viral. The original Steam listing recommended 64GB of RAM a first for a PC game, and double what even Microsoft Flight Simulator asks.

NC has since confirmed that figure was a listing error. The corrected recommendation is 32GB but the recommended GPU moved up to an RTX 4070 in the same update.

SpecMinimumRecommended
OSWindows 10/11 (64-bit)Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
CPUIntel Core i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600Intel Core i7-12700 / AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RAM32GB32GB
GPUNVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6GB)NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
Storage50GB50GB

A 32GB minimum is still extraordinary. For context, PS5 and Xbox Series X ship with 16GB of unified memory total.

The important caveat: NC states these specs reflect the current development build, and final launch requirements may come down as optimization continues. Given 2026’s inflated DDR5 pricing, that matters for a lot of players.

Cinder City Playtest: How Testing Works

The first pre-alpha playtest ran August 14–16, 2026, restricted to United States players aged 16 and over, in limited nightly windows. It carried a strict NDA, so no footage or impressions from it circulated publicly.

Selected applicants received instructions on August 12. Sign-ups were handled through the official Steam page and NC channels coverage of the schedule ran on Massively Overpowered and MMORPG.com.

More tests are expected before launch, and developers have confirmed an open beta is planned for 2026. Regional expansion beyond the US is the thing to watch for in the next round.

FAQ

Is Cinder City the same game as Project LLL?

Yes. Project LLL was renamed Cinder City in August 2025. Same game, same studio, official new title.

Is Cinder City free-to-play?

NC has not announced a business model. Given the studio’s history, both premium and free-to-play with monetization are plausible treat any claim otherwise as speculation.

Can you play Cinder City solo?

Yes. Story missions support solo play, though cooperative PvE is a core design pillar and the endgame leans heavily on squad content.

What consoles will Cinder City be on?

NC has confirmed current-generation consoles alongside PC. Given the Unreal Engine 5 foundation and hardware demands, PS4 and Xbox One versions are not expected.

Do I really need 32GB of RAM to play Cinder City?

Per the current listing, yes 32GB is the stated minimum. NC has said final requirements may be lower after optimization, so waiting for launch-day specs before upgrading is reasonable.

Should You Be Watching Cinder City?

If you want a co-op PvE shooter with genuine ambition a 30km seamless Seoul, cinematic storytelling, and raid-scale encounters Cinder City is one of the most interesting things arriving in 2026.

The risks are real: an unproven studio, an H2 window that could still slip, and hardware demands that will price out a chunk of the PC audience. But no other shooter is attempting this specific combination of scale, setting, and structure.
